I saw a psychologist whose specialities included sleep. She charged $200 an hour. I came out
of my session thinking: That was a waste of $300.
Eight months later I view that one session as worth every cent and more. After listening to my
woeful stories about insomnia, she told me to reframe my thinking. She said "First and
foremost think of your problem as an anxiety problem, of which insomnia is a symptom,
rather than the other way around. Cure your anxiety and you will cure your insomnia."
That advance was great in of itself. The next step was thinking about what things in my life
were causing anxiety and trying to change those things accordingly.
I think if you can truly identify underlying the factors and behaviors that are causing your
insomnia, you're a long way to solving the problem.
