What I like about my psychiatrist is that he never tells me to do anything...he just weaves little hints into his quirky monologues, and I do the rest. I think if he had told me to reframe my insomnia as anything, I would have resisted, and insisted to him that it was fundamentally physiological in origin. The fact that he's willing to entertain any etiology I bring to him (Me: "I've been wondering if I have a disrupted circadian rhythm." Him: "Well, why not. Let's see..." followed by 15 minutes of him exploring that possibility) removes any resistance I might have to the likelihood that my insomnia is psychological in origin. I think what offers me the most reassurance that I don't have a serious case of anything is his very off-handed attitude towards my insomnia. I take a lot of comfort from his consistent lack of concern that my insomnia has persisted so long (to me).
