Posted by lulubelle on June 01, 2009 at 10:04:26:Hi Everyone,
It's been awhile-I hope everyone has been doing well. I wanted to get some ideas about where to go from here.I quit the Remeron about a month ago, and started SR at 6 hours a night. In spite of the fact I had tried SR for 3 weeks last year with little/no success, I was again optimistic about SR since I was in a much better place emotionally and this technique works for so many people.
The first time around with SR last year, week 1 was pretty bad, week 2 showed improvement, and week 3 things deteriorated again. I freaked out and quit SR.
This time, I resolved to stay with it for a least a month and see what happens. Well, week 1 wasn't too bad, and at week 2 I was seeing improvement. Unfortunately, week 3 and so far with week 4 have been pretty bad. I fall asleep very quickly but am up again in 2-3 hours. Sometimes I can fall back asleep, but at least half the time I can't. I sleep a maximum of 5 hours, which is OK, but the 3 hours nights aren't too fun.
I am getting out of bed when I can't get back to sleep in case I've got some conditioning going on. I follow the SR hours faithfully, but my body just doesn't seem to like the technique. I see no consistent improvement at all, if anything my sleep maintenance problems seem to be getting more embedded.
I'm not anxious much at all, and am continuing to work and do my normal routine. I'm not as obsessed about sleep as I once was, but I get pretty discouraged. It's hard for me to give up on the idea of SR, since it works for so many folks, but I'm not willing to keep beating my head against the wall if I'm one of the unlucky ones where behavioral interventions don't work.
Sometimes I feel like a failure at this, and I have to remind myself that my ability to sleep is somewhat related to things that are out of my control-my hormones are in overdrive, and I still am grieving for all the losses I have been through. I have not ruled out going back on the meds-Remeron worked really well for me, and I don't want to needlessly suffer.
My plan is to keep up SR for the rest of the week, along with getting out of bed. If that doesn't work, I'm going to just go back to my regular routine, deal with the psychological distress, and possibly go back to the Remeron until my hormones calm down. In many ways I agree that the less we make of this issue, the faster we will recover. That being said, since SR helps so many, I wanted to give that a fair trial before throwing in the towel. My issue with SR isn't that it's too hard, or I am freaked out by less time in bed, it just doesn't seem to work.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Take care everyone.
