It occurred to me that the dosage of SSRI's antidepressants does not have to be increased after a person is stablilized. I had good results with Paxil for quite a while until it pooped out.
Fortunately...and unfortunately...our brains seems to adapt to all medications after prolonged use.
In November, when I went to a shrink because of insomnia, he insisted the sleeplessness was due to depression and he put me on several medications at once. He assumed that if the depression was fixed, the insomnia would be fixed, as well. I kept telling him that my depression was secondary, not the primary problem, but, he insisted he was the authority and, frankly, I was too tired too object.
Anyway, the following 6 months became a living nightmare for me and I eventually decided I had to wean myself off all the medications. To do this, I sought help from various psychiatric forums on the Internet, which were very helpful.
One thing I learned, however, is , in the world of the psychiatric patient, medication modification is an ongoing thing. The meds produce effects in the brain, which necessitate changing the pills or giving new pills to counteract the side effects of the initial pills. Very few people stay on the same drug cocktail for a prolonged period of time.
I don't want to get into a Michael Jackson discussion because it is too depressing, but, he is a good example of someone whose medication was constantly modified. If there were a "magic pill" available (which is what we are all searching for, isn't it?) he, with all his money and influence, would have found it.
Let's not discuss Michael Jackson...his problems were unique to him and we must not compare ourselves to him...but, we should agree, that, if there were an easy answer to be found for our problem, he, of all people, would have solved it.
