You may want to think about a complete sleep study since it sounds like you have a high probability of sleep apnea. In any case, the first step is retraining yourself to sleep on your side. That may require a softer mattress (add a mattress topper) and higher pillows to support your head (sometimes a body pillow will help with supporting the upper knee, and a pillow behind your back can help keep you on your side). You want to keep your neck slightly extended (chin up) and remind yourself to sleep in such a way to maximize the chances of keeping your airway open. A slight inclination of the head of the bed (put a pillow under the mattress) may also help.
The hypnagogic hallucinations and lucid dreams will probably recede when you are sleeping better. Sleeping on your back should not be an option.
