Do i have EDS?? Confused.

Posted by electracat on November 13, 2009 at 20:11:24:

Hi there,

I have some questions about EDS. I always assumed i had it, as I (due to lack of deep sleep, based on sleep labs and my own intuition) am insanely tired during the day. It's a burning, 'painful' tiredness--well, sleepiness-- that forces me to put my head down and try to sleep. If i can sleep, i get relief. If i can't, i'm miserable. It comes on like a tidal wave, and i have no choice but to try to sleep. However, i can't always sleep...I guess this is where the anxiety comes in.

I had an MSLT during one of my sleep labs, and it was determined that i don't have narcolepsy because i only slept about 2 minutes total; i was SO tired, though, but can't always sleep on demand! When i got home i slept for two hours.

What i've been reading about EDS--and, when i take the Epsworth Sleepiness Scale--suggests that unless one actually FALLS ASLEEP, one can't be said to have EDS. Is this true? I was asked if i will fall asleep during conversations, drives, etc...I won't fall asleep involuntarily, but i will be in pain and miserable because i NEED to sleep, and i have a much better chance if lying down by myself.

I guess i'm asking this because certain conditions are assigned based on EDS, and I'm wondering--does EDS mean one falls asleep involuntarily, or can one just feel awful (not always able to sleep, however) and have EDS?

Thanks!
