Sudden onset of insomnia.

Posted by Ash on November 14, 2009 at 03:47:05:

Ever since I visited the hospital three weeks ago for abdominal pain I have had anxiety and insomnia, I think the pain was actually caused by the anxiety.

The night before I went to the hospital I had trouble sleeping because I was anxious about the pain and during the two nights in hospital I didn't sleep at all because I was too anxious to do so. When I got home I went to bed and slept for 10 hours, until about 11pm, then the next night I slept about 4-5 hours, then 2-3 hours, then a few nights of 7-8 hours, and now for the last 3-4 nights I have only slept about 1-2 hours. I have also developed morning anxiety which gives me abdominal cramps/pain and nausea and although I'm not anxious when going to bed, after lying in bed for an hour or so I start to become anxious and don't feel sleepy, though I do feel exhausted. Sleeping with the light on helps to alleviate the anxiety strangely enough. Not sleeping well causes me to worry about my health, exhaustion, hyperthyroidism and sporadic/famillial fatal insomnia all spring to mind and exacerbate the problem. When I'm really anxious even the slightest noise startles me.

It's also affecting my concentration at university, I fell behind with the coursework which has caused me even more stress! I've practised sleep hygeine but that doesn't help to relax me, can anyone reccomend some cognotive behavioural techniques to help me to get a decent nights sleep?
