problem staying asleep

Posted by dan23 on November 14, 2009 at 23:10:23:

Hi all, this is my first visit. I have no problem at all going to sleep. My
problem is with waking up too early. Most nights I wake up somewhere between 4 and 6 am and slowly come round, thinking too much. Constantly circling round some minor worry at work. If I try to think about something else, I feel myself becoming more awake. The small worries just take turns: I hop from one to the other until I'm fully awake, give up and get up. Or I stay with one topic, but go over it endlessly, slowly getting more alert until I am completely awake and get up.
The thing is, in the evenings I'm very tired, find myself unable to stay awake. I'm sitting there talking with my wife and start to doze off in the middle. Or when we have friends around, same thing, very embarrasing. Can't fight it, eventually give up and go to bed, but this interferes with our time together, the only adult time we have, when the kids are in bed.
I'm pretty sure there's an anxiety thing in there somewhere, stress related. Have read on one of these threads about valerian and st. john's wort, seems worth a try; don't fancy getting into medication.
Any suggestions? Thanks for reading this far!
