Stressful events can have a weird effect on the body, lasting longer than when we think they ought to! And then, your body gradually restores to homeostasis. It just has its own course, and sometimes, the best you can do is support it and wait. The waiting is really the hard part, especially if you're exhausted in the meantime.
I will cheer on your idea of increasing your exercise, for two reasons. I really believe for many (not all), that is the most important place to start when there's a sleep problem. The other is, even if you find that increasing your exercise doesn't help with sleep, it helps with stress and fatigue. Exercise is the most powerful non-medication anxiolytic we have. It produces an endorphin release, which increases sense of well-being. It may seem counterintuitive when you're tired, but exercise is energizing.
I'd also suggest you not work so hard at fixing this problem, by trying so many things at once. Don't bother with sleep restriction. You just need to increase the sense of well-being and relaxation in your body, and have some confidence that sleep will return. It may take a while, but it will happen.
