electracat, have you ever tried inhaling lavender essential oil? It is a strong anxiolytic. I use it whenever I am having a panic attack, or when I have strong feelings that are raising my heart rate. I find that it has the same lovely, relaxing effect on my whole being as smoking m (which I can't smoke anymore). Lavender is well-known by herablists for thousands of years as a gentle sedative. What makes this oil so effective is that it takes effects within minutes. What I do is lie down, inhale from the bottle 4-10 times deeply, then just relax and deep breathe. It always makes a huge difference to me (better than exercise or deep breathing alone), and I am very mellowed within 10 minutes.
