Many studies have shown that nursing homes tend to have low levels of light during the day, with very little or no direct sunlight. Add that to a noisy night and lights being left on to check on patients and you end up with a fairly flat sleep wake rhythm.

The biggest problem is they experience very little if any consolidated sleep. They get close to their normal amount of sleep scattered over a 24 hour period.

So if you were to visit someone in a nursing home at any time day or night, there is a 50-50 chance they will be asleep. (percentage depends on the amount of sleep they would normally get)

Best wishes,
Sandman
