I am 28 years old and have suffered from insomnia on and off for four years. It was originally triggered by a period of stress but has developed into being some sort of conditioned insomnia connected to all sorts of noise. In the beginning it was probably anxiousness keeping me awake and this made me very 'alert' and then I started listening to the sounds around me which I then learned to associate with not being able to fall asleep. The first noise I noticed was the breathing of my husband and I would lie awake listening to it, actually concentrating on it, and it drove made me crazy! Sadly, we now have to sleep in separate bedrooms so that I can't hear his breathing. I know some people say that regular sounds like breathing is supposed to be calming, but for me, concentrating on listening just keeps me totally awake. I have tried all sorts of earplugs, but the crazy thing is that then I have to concentrate even more to check if I can hear the breathing and that really keeps me awake. I guess this must be some sort of obsessive thought. Lately the same applies to traffic noise etc. I now have to sleep in a place without any noise (and I have to know for sure that there is no noise, so that I don't concentrate on listening for it). I'm not interested in taking any drugs. Does anyone know of good techniques to make my mind focus on other things than listening for sounds? I really hope that my husband and I can share bedroom again.Lise
