I've also been using amitriptyline for sleep purposes, but higher doses. Usually 50-70 mg.

And YES, I also have been noticing a problem with weight even tho I work out and watch my diet. So maybe this is the problem.

Also, be advised that amitriptyline can cause ringing in the ears. It is one of the possible side effects. I happen to also have tinnitus, so I think I'm going to stop using it and see what happens.

Finally, I also have experience with ambien (so far you are batting 1000!). Try to avoid taking it every night. It is definitely for short term use, and is addictive.
