waking up at night and depression

Posted by Simone on April 20, 2000 at 18:36:46:

I fall asleep ok but I wake up at about 2-3 a.m. and have trouble falling back to sleep. I am not anxious and probably fall asleep several times thereafter, but don't really realize. Several of the postings indicate that depression is the cause of wakings after one falls asleep. Is this just folklore or is there some science behind this? How does one know she is depressed? Thanks.
