I also wake up every night between 2:00 and 3:00 and either have great difficulty falling asleep again or just fall in and out of a light sleep. I believe that my lack of sleep is caused by anxiety about the upcoming day, not depression about it but merely planning and thinking about what I am going to do, particularly after having a child.
