To answer your question, you can purchase Xanax through drugstore.com and probably any other online drugstore out there. You do need a prescription, and if you get a prescrition, you are better of just going to the drugstore nearest your house since it will be a lot faster. As for pricing, as of this past october (at a Walgreens in chicago) you could get 30 pills of the generic version (0.5 mg) for about $10.
Now for my 2 cents. Do NOT take xanax unless it is going to be for a very short time to deal with an event "outside" of the norm of your day to day life. If you plan on taking it long term to help you sleep, something is wrong. Do not rely on drugs to get you to sleep. If there is a physiological basis to your insomnia, you need to deal with that (depression, RLS, apnea, etc). If your sleep problem is psychological try the sleep restirction program (outlined in the book "Desperately seeking snoozin). Insomnia is the symptom and not the disorder. Just treating the symptom is paving a road to trouble.
