Based on what you told us about the cancer, you certainly had a reason to experince fear. Unfortunately, the fear was strongest at bedtime.

Your mind starts to 'connect' fear with sleep. Instead of associating peace and rest with 'bedtime', your mind now associates anxiety with bedtime. And that will certainly lead to insomnia.

Ok. So how do you improve your situation? Well, first of all, purchase and read the following two books:

Desperately Seeking Snoozin': The Insomnia Cure from Awake to Zzzzz
Author: John Wiedman

Say Good Night to Insomnia
Author: Gregg D. Jacobs

These books are available on this website in "Sandman's Mall", or through any internet bookseller (Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble, etc.)

Then, you need to try to taper off the Ambien. The "Jacobs" book is very good at suggesting a schedule for reducing your dependence on a sleeping pill.

Also, talk to a doctor about the possibility of using anti-depressant medicines that can induce sleep. They are not supposed to be addicting, but they can have a lot of side effects. For more information about that, read all the posts on this Forum #5 (and the earlier forums).

Best wishes.
