Here's my mattress warning of July 17th on this site:

For what it's worth...I want to warn you about changing your mattress.

I've had insomnia for a couple of years. And I was just starting to get a 'little' better with behavior modification techniques, etc.

Then I got the 'brilliant' idea to change my mattress in an attempt to, possibly, sleep better. Over the year's, I've read all the "mattress industry" B.S. about new mattresses giving you a better night's sleep. And since mine was about 18 years old, I thought that a new mattress was 'in order'.

"WRONG!" I spent $600, which I can ill-afford, and bought a new set. Well, if I didn't have insomnia, I'm certain that all would have been fine. But when you have insomnia, the slightest change to something you've grown accustomed to for 18 years can really mess you up.

Every time I would turn-over in the middle of the night, I would be 'waken-up' because my body would 'sense' that something was different/wrong.

The store where I bought the mattress was kind enough to let me exchange it for a different one, but that didn't improve the situation. Every time I'd turn over, or when I'd be in a light part of my sleep cycle, my mind/body would wake me up because it could sense the difference in the sleeping surface.

Sounds pretty neurotic, right? When the neurosis was yet to come. Now, I have started to 'fear' going to bed and sleeping on the new matress. And that has brought on a whole new type of insomnia. I start getting anxiety attacks right at bedtime...which I never had before getting the new mattress. And all the progress I made before changing mattresses is now gone...and my insomnia is much worse than ever before.

So, in conclusion to this long winded message, I just want to warn you: If you have insomnia, 'think twice' about getting a new mattress. And, if you 'do' get a new one, make certain to keep your old one (which, thank God, I did) for a few weeks to ensure that the new mattress won't make matters worse.
