I have had long experience with ambien. I found that as long as I was not keyed up, and otherwise relaxed, 5mg would almost always put me to sleep.
Seemed to work even better if I took it about 45 minutes or so after going to bed, since I would get somewhat sleepy during that time. Also worked much better on an empty stomach.

However, if I was not relaxed, even 10mg didn't put me to sleep.

A good substitute for ambien (at least for me) is 50mg of elavil about an hour before bedtime. If that doesn't quite do the trick, taking a Unisom does. I'm not recommending that, since I don't know what interactions, if any, might occur taking both of those meds. But I never experience any kind of aftereffects; also, elavil is supposed to be non-addictive.

Ambien never gave me any adverse side effects, but each person seems to react differently to it. I think doctors recommend not taking any more than 10mg at one time.
