Lots of prescription meds are prescribed for what is called "off label" use.

For example, I have elavil to help me sleep, but it's main purpose is to deal with depression, not insomnia.

If it were me, I would follow the therapist's advice. If you experience bad side effects, then of course you would re-evaluate the situation.
