Roger, I had similar experience as you, though shorter. Initially for 3 months, I took Ambien and Elavil together to knock me out and stayed asleep. Later, I finally taper off Ambien, then I was on Elavil alone for another month. Then I stop Elavil. As you say, gradually, my body learn how to sleep on its own. I have been pill-free for 2 months, though sometimes I still have bad nights, but my sleeping log shows these kinds of bad nights are getting less and less.
