tired and tired of it

Posted by Rich on July 31, 2000 at 18:51:17:

My sleep problems began about 4 years ago when I joined the Air Force. For some reason, I think that smoking cigarettes has something to do with it (or at least in my mind it now does) because we couldn't smoke in basic training or in tech school so I was forced to quit for a few months. But then the urge hit me and I felt like smoking again, so on weekends I would go out to the bar and smoke. Right around this time I started having the sleep problems. I wouldn't sleep at all for days (longest was 5 in a row. The doc said that was impossible, but I swear it's true) Then I would sleep for maybe a few days afterward, and then return to the insomnia. I started smoking again on a daily basis, even though the Air Force considered this a crime, because the insomnia really stressed me out and life in the Air Force wasn't all that great either. After I got out of tech school the problems lessened somewhat, but I was still not receiving deep sleep, and there would be periods of a month or two where I would go back to the old alternating pattern of sleep/no sleep. I am now out of the Air Force, and living at home with parents. It is a pretty relaxing life, but I STILL AM NOT SLEEPING. I've noticed now that (this may sound strange) I almost prevent myself from sleeping. I feel myself nodding off, but something in my head "clicks" and for some reason I wake myself up. After a few times of this, and I might as well forget about sleep for the night. I have not smoked for 3 days now, in hopes that this might help, but my problems with sleep seem worse. I can say that insomnia has really made my life a living hell and has really interfered with relationships and work.
I Am going to see a psychologist, but if anyone has any input on natural remedies, or behavior modifications it would be of great help.
