JKB just told my story. I'm exactly like him. I only have trouble sleeping when there's work the next day. It doesn't matter what job it is, or whether I like the job, the boss etc., if it requires getting up, it's a problem.

I figure it's like throwing a football. I can throw a football, probably you or your grandmother can throw one too. But can you throw a football when several big linebackers are coming at you? In other words, can you throw one under pressure? Well, I can't sleep under pressure, either.

I had occasional trouble sleeping during high school, but the insomnia didn't start until I graduated and took my first job. I had my first sleepless night before my first day at my first job. And it was all downhill from there. The guy I was working for was the biggest a**hole in the world, and he fired me in five months.

I then started a new job that I liked. But the sleep problems continued. By then I was 19 years old, and I soon discovered alcohol. I developed a bad drinking problem in record time. The only reason that I didn't kill someone in a car accident is because I drank by myself at home, trying to make myself fall asleep.

I also tried a lot of prescription drugs, including Quaalude (in the early 70s), Valium, Dalmane, Librium, and others. I used to drink on top of the ludes and am fortunate to be alive.

I finally got help for my drinking problem and go to AA. I haven't had a drink in almost 20 years, I'm now 52 years old. I stayed sober with AA, but the sleep only got worse. No one with AA could understand my problem, all they did was trivialize it and make it seem like I was whining. I continued to try various ant-depressants, all to no avail.

I retired early from my job in the government at 48, almost 4 years ago. I still had trouble sleeping at the first part time job I got. After that, I moved to southwest Virginia and am working 830-1230 five days a week. I think the thing that's saved me this time is the knowledge that if I have a bad night, I can take a nap when I get home at 1. I'm also taking 10mg of Ambien. So far, I havent had to increase the dose.

Gotta go, will write more later if anyone wants to hear it.

Tom
