Your father should also know that benzodiazepines which I believe Xanax is, can have harmful effects on memory and learning. I have experienced this myself with other benzodiazepines. Your father needs to see a doctor who will work hard to help him find solutions which will help him physically, psychologically, and in regards to the effects this is having on your family. If the family doctor doesn't seem to be doing any good, try a psychiatrist. They often have a great deal of experience with what drug options are out there for insomnia and are well aware of the addiction potential. Not all psychiatrists are alike, though, and you have to shop around.

Good luck to you and your dad.
