There is a DSM code for insomnia, it's just that they don't like to use it because insomnia is considered a symptom, rarely the disease itself. And generally if you've not slept for a month, you're going to be depressed or anxious, which you can't be to be diagnosed this way. I did have this label once, but only for about a month before it turned itno depression. However, primary insomnia is a diagnosis (307.42). The characteristics are:
A. predominant complaint of difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep for a least 1 month
B. sleep disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning
C. sleep disturbance does not occur exclusively during the course of narcolepsy, breathing-related sleep disorder, circadian rhythm sleep disorder, or a parasomnia
D. does not occur exclusively in the course of another mental disorder (major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, a delirium)
E. not due to direct physiological effects of a substance
