Karin,
Don't give up hope! While I was in my 30's when my insomnia started, I felt like you do--hopeless, frustrated and exhausted. I had to try many medications before I found one that worked, and it didn't work immediately (although it did pretty quickly). I am on Elavil, also called Amitryptiline here in the US. It is a tri-cyclic antidepressant that has been around for quite some time. I've also read that another person who posts to this forum is using Trazadone, which is a similar medication. I take mine in the early evening, and then I'm ready for sleep a few hours later. Both of these medications can help sleep-onset problems due to their sedative qualities.

Some other non-medication things you can try:

Take a warm (not hot) bath about 2-3 hours before you want to sleep. The bath heats your body up a bit, and as it cools down, it simulates the drop in temperature that your body naturally does when approaching the time to sleep. Obviously, other over-the-counter/natural stuff you can try: Valerian Root, Melatonin, calming teas (we have Sleepytime here in the US), 5-HTP, Kava Kava, etc. Please don't give up! Chances are you will find something that works if you are persistent.

Wishing you blessings,
Linda O
