bad reactions to elavil?

Posted by Ellen on October 26, 2000 at 10:50:42:

My doctor prescribed a very low dose of Elavil (10mg per
night) to help me sleep. Although it took a while to get
started, I did get a real benefit from it. My doctor wrote a new prescription for 25 mg
(his intention was to start me off on a low dose and gradually increase). To prepare for the 25mg he recommended I double up on the 10mg pills
until the old prescription was done. This I did with no problem. But the very first night I took the 25mg, I felt awful- like I'd taken a different drug- my face was flushed, heart pounding, and NO sleep. I soldiered on for 2 more days at the 25mg but finally the burning sensation in my face just got too bad and I told my doctor, he told me to go back to the lower dose. I still had the same reaction even with the old 10mg dose. So I stopped taking it for about 4 or 5 days, so I could "start over." For the next couple days after that, I was able to take th 10mg per night with a modest sleep benefit (not as good as it was before), but last night... I took the 10mg as usual and my heart was just pounding like a locomotive for hours. I just don't understand the widely varying reactions I have even to the low dose now. The only other pill I take is Claritin (just regular Claritin, not Claritin D). I am really bummed because the Elavil was helping me get a great night's sleep (I never had trouble falling
asleep before, but I would wake up at 2 a.m. or so and lie awake for hours, every night for years, which the Elavil stopped). Why am I having these bad reactions to it, when before it worked so well). Someone suggested I take Serzone instead. Any similar experiences?
