Nancy:
Hi. I am new here but I believe I am in the same situation as yourself. I am 42 and suffered since my late 20's with insomnia. There was a period of about 6 - 8 years that I had it under better control, but the last 5 or so years it is awful. I can go days without sleep. I take the same meds you do. The elavil quit working about 2 years after I began taking it. Just a thought: I know it's not good to not be consistant with the meds but the ONLY way elavil works for me anymore is if I take it every other day. I take anywhere from 50 to 75 mg. on alternate days and I sleep like a baby. After going 3 or 4 days without sleep, sleeping on alternate days seems like a viable alternative.
I am currently trying hormone replacement therapy, about 1 & 1/2 months into it. I am already feeling more, "alert," and less, "spaced out," when I do have to take elavil. I've tried EVERYTHING like yourself. The hormone idea makes sense and is one area I have not tried with any consistancy or length of time. I agree with that avenue :) I'll keep you in my prayers. I drove 30 miles from my place to meet a friend on 3 days without sleep and I had to stop 10 + times on my drive home and I was seriously not a competent driver in that state. You must be beside yourself. My mother (in her 70's) takes hormone replacement for bone loss and for headaches. She is happy with it and feels better. I am trying a natural hormone replacement from a pharmacy that is able to transfer the script to a natural, but high, dose of estrogen/progesterone. You take care.
