i too believe that i've 'become depressed' due to an impossible relationship, work & family stress, a very noisy living environment and an hour or two of sleep/night for the past year.
i definitely believe that if you're immersed in stressful/sleepless situations for too long, your brain will forge new and 'depressive' neuronal pathways which it'll begin to follow solely out of this new-yet-established way of thinking/behaving.
like a stream of water 'carving out' a groove in the rocks over which it flows for thousands of years, the brain is not so dissimilar.
i don't think i'm a depressive type of person at all, but life's circumstances have definitely left me feeling and behaving that way.
i firmly believe that my severe lack of sleep has brought on depressive symptoms and not the other way around (although the 3 MDs i've seen have adamantly refused to accept this ridiculous scenario. pshaw).
i'm terrified of going on anti-depressants, so for the time being have decided instead to dump my overbearing boyfriend, am starting accupuncture next week, am moving to a new part of town, have enrolled in a dance class & have bought out the entire 'Sleepytime Tea' section at the health food store :)...hopefully this will do the trick.
if not, may have to go the chemical route. yuck.

maybe this PhD fellow understands that your depression has been situationally-induced, but
is just labelling it as clinical.
then again, maybe he has no idea what he's saying
and can't appreciate that you're an otherwise
happy woman who has gone through the wringer and is reacting in a normal, healthy way to severe stress.
i don't know... maybe you should get another
counsellor!
good luck with all your challenges.
