It's hard to advise you on sleep restriction since I'm not a doctor and I don't know if your individual situation would warrant something different than mine. But I can tell you how my sleep doctor came up with my schedule. I kept a detailed sleep diary which showed him I was only sleeping 4.9 hours a night. Therefore, I wasn't allowed to be in bed for more than 5 hours a night. I was supposed to do that for a month, but only made it 3 1/2 weeks. It would probably differ for you. He picked the hours I would be in bed based on the most likely time I might fall asleep based on my sleep diary. I'd get another sleep doctor if I were you, because I couldn't do this without the constant advise of my doctor. He has changed my hours based on my responses.
You never said whether your sleep problems were from ambien?
