Is it really just insomnia?

Posted by onyx on March 15, 2001 at 10:56:30:

I am going on 7 months of being medicated for insomnia. It really started when I had a rough semester at school, but I have always napped and felt tired throughout the day. I have dropped myself down to .25mg of Xanax currently on my own because I hate being on them. (My first MD was giving me 3mg of Lorazapam, and my 2nd MD gave me 1 mg of Xanax.) I tried to sleep without anything, but lay awake. I am exhausted most of the day, but cannot sleep. My legs twitch at night, I have had nightmares all my life, and I sometimes get night sweats. I used to actually keep a nightmare diary because they were so frequent. When I first start to fall asleep I immediately go into a dream and my legs jump and I gasp awake. I also now feel "cloudy" during the day. I am on my 2nd MD for this, but I am not feeling satisfied. They just seem to keep giving me pills without a real answer to the problem. I have been tested for thyroid disease, but the test comes out fine. I have a very high-stress, Type A personality, but I am not depressed at all. I also do not drink alcohol. Every night prior to bed I drink a cup of decaf tea and use a lavender eye pillow. I don't know what is wrong. I want to get off of these meds and sleep normally. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
