To Robert.... I have been down the same road that you are currently traveling on; early morning awakenings, anticipatory anxiety,in search of the magic pill that will let me sleep like a baby. I would strongly suggest that you purchase "SAY GOODNIGHT TO INSOMNIA" BY Greg Jacobs and Desperately Seeking Snoozin' by John Wiedman before trying trazadone or zyprexa. In the long run you will be much better off by learning cognitive-behavioral techniques that will enhance the quality and quantity of your sleep each night. In conjunction you will also learn about sleep hygiene, stress reduction methods and how to elicit the relaxation response. Proper nutrition and exercise will play a big part as well. It's very important to stay positive and grateful each day. At the same time if you are a spiritual person you may want to dedicate more time toward spiritual development. Volunteer work can also help one feel better about themselves. The old adage: the more you give the more you receive is true. In hindsight; I wish had found a sleep forum like this when i first started to experience insomnia. One thing you need to realize is that trazadone, zyprexa, elavil, remeron, ambien, sonata, any benzodiazepines, doxepin, and any other medication will disturb your natural sleep rhythm, decrease the amount of sleep spindles that your brain produces in the second stage of your sleep, and finally decrease the amount of time that you spend in stages three and four hence your delta cycles which is essential for memory, response to stimuli, reaction time, and concentration. Eventually the medications stop working and you end up psychologically and physically addicted to them. And then the fun part is trying to wean yourself off them. I have been experiencing nausea, sweating,my finger tips and my back and neck start to get real cold at times. I feel itchy and i'm always tired. I feel like i'm dying a slow death. I wish i never listened to the doctors. I wish i never took any medication for my insomnia. It's like i made a deal with the devil. The answers are not in a pill. I hope that you make the right decision. God Bless Scott M.
