By supplements, do you mean things like Vitamin C or valerian tablets, etc? If so, I think it's very rare to hear about 'side effects' in the same sense that people on this list often talk about the side effects that come with various sleep-inducing or depression-reducing drugs (except of course, some vitamins shouldn't be taken in large amounts because the body cannot absorb them). Many herbs work on detoxifying the body (drugs tend to to the opposite). However, no matter what is used, a gentle approach is probably best: sometimes detoxification can be so radical as to cause as many if not more problems than it solves. Even so, I do worry about the degree to which people think that drugs are 'scientific' and proven and therefore fine, whereas supplements and alternative remedies are 'non-scientific' and therefore not fine. Excuse my skepticism, but the side-effects of drugs are sometimes not known for years, regardless of the amount of laboratory testing performed on rats and other small animals (and in some cases humans). And I'm continually reading about list-members' horror stories with drugs and doctors. This doesn't mean of course that all supplements are safe or even work. Still confused?? Join the club ...

No matter what course of action, it's always best to seek the advice of someone who is an 'expert' in that area, whether it is a traditional doctor, acupunturist, etc. I've personally done some really stupid self-diagnosis things over the years with supplements, but nothing I haven't recovered from (I think!)

all the best
