David...Some of your statements are valid but there is a great difference between drugs and herbs. People die of drug overdoses, severe allergic reaction to drugs, and many great complications including death from drugs that are contraindicatory. It is very rare, if at all that anyone has died from an herb overdose. The statistic for deaths form drugs is incredibly high and increasing every year. Why do pharmaceutical drugs have to be prescribed and herbs don't? If the FDA really felt there was a great risk in using over the counter herbs some political maneuver to have them controlled would have occurred already.I have many bottles of herbs which I may have used one or two pills. If they did not work I dismissed them immediately. Prescribed drugs are different. People will use them indefinitely even if they are not working. Why? Because they become physically and psychologically addicted to them very quickly.Funny it took me two years to get off xanax but only a week to stop taking valerian and other herbs. Half the time the xanax didn't work anyway... I don't recommend taking herbs indiscrimaively but if you are lucky enough to find one that is effective for you until you can finally sleep on your own
it is a great substitute for a pharmaceutical drug. I took xanax for two years, and felt sick and horrible every day of the two years, not to mention the two previous years alternating between ativan, restoril, ambien, and feeling horrible also. I now take a supplement called Sure sleep. It assists me in sleeping rather than hypnotising me into a drug induced stupor. I wake up feeling refreshed and wonderful after 7 hours of sleep which includes the stages of sleep that are meant to be . I have no hangover, no withdrawal from a half life benzo, or lethargy and fatigue. It is a new world and I am so happy to be alive again. I cannot understand people like you who always want to put down a superior substance just for the sake of a scientific argument. If you questioned 100 people who could not sleep and asked them if they would rather be addicted to valerian or prozac I think the answer would be valerian. So everthing in life is a risk. Breathing air is a risk too. Hope
