David, David, David...

You mention yourself that a) the occurrence of toxic reactions to herbals is becoming increasingly rare in industrialised countries; b) herbals are not synthesized (I'm thinking rather unscientifically of the difference between nice wholegrain bread and white fluffy hi-fibre here); c) herbals are low in potency, thus well-tolerated and non-addictive. From postings on this list (of people's personal experiences)there does indeed seem to be a huge difference between 'dependency' on supplements and the kinds of dire withdrawals that accompany 'addictions' to many of the drugs mentioned. Mere semantics?? I think not!! I realize that the above non-negative effects don't necessarily mean that herbals etc. necessarily have positive effects. You could in fact claim that positive effects are placebo effects, and who knows, maybe they are (someone earlier quoted a rather unscientific statistic about insomnia being 90% mental, if this were the case, wouldn't it mean that in some circumstances herbals constitute a 'cure' and isn't this what most list-members are interested in?). If I were a gigantic pharmaceutical company I doubt that I'd be funding and publishing research on 'natural' remedies, except to say that results suggest that they are ineffective (cf. tobacco companies). What I'm hearing also from the list is that quite a few people feel that their experiences don't seem to count with their doctors. Apologies for my cynicism ... in fact, I'm really glad that drugs exist, especially the one that I'm on :) Apologies also to 'what's the point?' who is concerned about the argumentative nature of some of the posts. Read further, and you'll see many posts that are not. I promise that my next message (if the Sandman allows one ... I didn't, after all, mention the 'C' word!) will be absolutely sweet and non-argumentative.

all the best to you all,
anna
