In a way, a lot of people feel that they don't get much help from a lot of doctors. I have American Indian blood and was going to an indian hospital during the first few months of the insomnia problem I've been encountering for about a year and 4 months. I thought that I would get better care with a primary care physician, but even today I got dismissed by a Psychiatrist because I told her I stopped taking lithium for a supposed bipolor disorder I don't feel I have after 2 weeks of taking it with nothing but mildly lame side effects w/ no sleep help.
Anyhow... I'm not sure what your situation is with not being able to see a doc (insurance, money, etc... ) but I've been to local helth food stores where you could probably get some reasonable advice or maybe even peruse the health and medical book isles for help on symptoms that might be accompanying/underlying some of these problems. The natural way of healing can take some time though with changes in diet and lifestyle that could help. You may need some help sooner than that for your girlfriend--maybe a local church counselor (don't know if they charge in your area or if you have to be a member. If the latter, I'd join the church for a couple of weeks or so then seek help) or possibly call the suicide hotline and see if they can refer her and/or yourself for some couseling on how you might better handle the situation.
Hang in there, and God be with you and your girlfriend,
Leonard
