I would be very careful with the so-called "herbals." For some people, they can become addictive (such as the non-drug substance caffeine), and because they are not regulated by the FDA, you can get tremendously varying formulas and concentrations of substances. Also, because there's no FDA involvement, you have no idea how the substances will react with other medications, whether they be prescription or over-the-counter. I've been reading about several people who have suffered strokes, brain damage and heart problems from taking "natural" supplements for weight loss and improved sexual performance. I personally had problems from taking St. John's Wort, and it took me several weeks to recover from taking it only for 1 week. So, tread carefully--I know first-hand how frustrating it is to suffer from insomnia, and I've benefited and suffered from the treatments. I highly recommend a sleep professional, and be careful with the "natural" stuff. I spent $$$ with an acupunturist/herbilist who only set me back in terms of my progress with my insomnia treatment. The MD helped me out a lot more.

Good luck. Hopefully one of these days there will be a breakthrough in discovering the root cause of sleep disorders and there will no longer be a need for these treatments!
