My parents had the same problem. If Mom couldn't talk Dad out of turning on the fan, she insisted that he put it at a higher speed (the slowest seems to make the most noise). She was usually able to sleep then. If all else failed she slept on the couch!
Hope you can come up with a compromise that works for both!
