Of course it can put you to sleep. I bet if someone gave me what looked like a 10mg ambien pill (white) but it was really 1.25, I would go to sleep in a flash.

Most of our sleeping problems are psychological. They are in most cases the result of some underlying anxiety. So if we believe a pill will do the trick, they will, regardless of the potency.

And let me add just a note about side effects. I am getting a bit tired (no pun intended) of people who post all kinds of things about bad side effects of Ambien.

One person even called it an "evil" drug. This is nonsense, and not very responsible. Any med can be abused, and unwelcome side effects will result.
Also, we are all different in terms of how we react to medications. What might be a problem with you will be fine with me. So all of these generalizations should be taken with a grain of salt.

For myself, an occasional 5mg of ambien works wonders, with no side effects whatsoever. A good night's sleep is far better than staying awake most of the night. But that is because I take it in a responsible way. It was never intended for long term use.

People who badmouth ambien are usually those who abuse it, or take it on a long term basis. Granted, some may have negative side effects, but that in no way means everyone else will experience the same thing.
