Just to repeat what I've said before, there are a number of alternatives to ambien. Elavil for one. It has sedative effects and is non-addictive.

Your experience with ambien is not unusual. It is definitely intended for short-term use. One thing you might consider is to give your system a day off, maybe two if you can, instead of taking ambien each night.

I know that ambien and ativan are in the same class of meds, but I found alternating them helped maintain their effectiveness.

Also check out atenolol if the cause of your insomnia is anxiety related.
