Although loss of deep sleep may cause immune system problems, I have found that one can operate in good health on very little sleep. In my case, anxiety over NOT sleeping was making me lose weight. But although my insomnia was pretty severe for over a year, I did not experience any colds or chronic illness. Once I began to practice good sleep hygiene and actually spent less time in bed, I found that my sleep became deeper and more efficient. Although I may only sleep 5 to 6 hours, I rarely wake up during the night and feel as if I sleep deeply.

The reason I am posting this is so that those whose insomnia is caused by a conditioned fear rather than a physical problem or an inability to enter deep sleep stages do not worry too much about the effects on their immune system of sleep deprivation. In some cases, this will cause anxiety, which may be more harmful than not sleeping!
