Susie, I have always had premenstrual insomnia where I have had difficulty for about a week before menstruation sleeping. But when my insonmia started four years ago I assumed it was related to being perimenopausal . Although my levels of hormones were perfect there are still sublinical things going on which change a woman's body physiologically at this age.I am 51. So don't be shocked if you test normal hormonally but still have many other symptoms.I do not know if the anxiety is independent or and integral part of this mess. But it is common with sleep deprivation to have anxiety, and often the feeling that your body is vibrating. Again is the which came first the chicken or the egg? Are you having difficulties in other areas of your life? Many perimenopausal woman report insomnia and also many menopausal woman have it too. I have heard many woman say they had insomnia for ten years while going through menopause. Not a pretty picture. My sister at 52 had insomnia for four months and went on hormones and is sleeping fine. I am not an advocate of hormones but you might want to have your estrogen levels checked to see if they are low. The bottom line is you have to treat the problem wherever it is coming from or what label you give it.So relax, do deep breathing
talk to other premenopausal woman and commiserate,
eat nutritionally, and try to get at least an hour of two half hour sessions of exercise daily, preferably one in the early morn, and one late in the afternoon All these things will be helpful in keeping the anxiety at bay.You can also drink the relaxing herb teas as sleeptyime and camomille. They may or may not work for you.Other than that you nave to make the determination wheher the anxiety is a reaction or symptom to your life or a result of the perimenopause...It may be hard to determine because everything seems to get tied up together and you land up chasing your tail. But, it sounds as if you do not have it too bad and will be able to control it.I wish you luck. Hope Master
