Insomnia caused by Depression

Posted by Ruth on June 06, 2001 at 15:03:27:

I started developed my Insomnia 4 months ago after my Postpartum Depression. I have seek medical help and I am on Zoloft since then. My depression symptom has decreased and I am feeling a lot better. However, I still could not sleep at night. During night time, I will be tired, dozing off, try to free of worry, but then when I get to my bed, I will be awake again, so I will have to repeat my ritual again (reading books till dozing off), and on going to many times.

I have been reading a few highly recommended book on Insomnia, including Dr. Jacob - Say Good Night to Insomnia, and Dr. Peter Hauri - No More Sleepless NIghts and also John Wiedman - Desperately Seeking Snoozin, all 3 books suggest the same thing, restrict your time in bed and sleep time and also relax and be worry free, do not be worry about Insomnia, and also exercise and expose to sun light.

I have been following the programmes for 3 weeks + now, and the recovering process has been very inconsistant. I will have few nights of very good nights (slept for 6 - 7 hours), and then follow by a whole night cannot sleep, then follow by a few 3 - 4 hours nights. And then the cycle repeats again. I have been following the programme quite faithfully, I exercise everyday for at least 20 munutes at 7pm, wind down myself at 11pm by watching TV and reading books till about 1 to 1.30am, then I will start dozing off. I keep my sleep log, and put in a lot of possitive thinking about sleep, and I usually do not get too anxious about sleepless night. However, I will be tired, dozing off, free of worry, and still cnnot sleep on certain nights.

For those of you who have successfully follow the programme, can anyone of you please advise me that is this part of the recovering process, and the process takes longer time to start for me to see consistancy?

Does anyone of you out there has the same experience as I have, suffered from Postpartum Depression or Depression caused Insomnia, has taken antidepressant but do not see result in curing Insomnia, but has successfully get cured by other methods, e.g. following the sleep restriction programme?
