I also read those three books and found them extremely helpful. It took me a while too. I had to loosen the sleep restriction and work on relaxation first. I meditated twice a day, once at night before bed and once after I got home from work. The afternoon meditation session was important because there was no pressure to fall asleep afterwords. It was just a practice session for relaxing and clearing my mind of work issues. Once I was better at relaxing, I no longer had problems falling asleep, but I did start having problems with early morning wakings. Then I added in the sleep restriction back into my routine. I was finally able to break the insomnia cycle.

I also exercise right away in the morning three times a week along with light exercise in the early evening. Diet and hearburn was also a big factor contributing to my insomnia.

I didn't take any medication, anti-depressants, or anti-anxiety (even though my doctor wanted to put me on Treznadone). Some anti-depressants (zoloft is one I've heard) have insomnia as a side effect and (as John experienced in Desperatly Seekin' Snoozin') some people react differently to sleep medication and anti-depressants. You may want to talk to your doctor about getting off zoloft and trying it without or switching to something different.

I've heard of some research on Omega3 fatty acids and postpartum depression (Newsweek, April 23 2001). Flax seed, salmon and walnuts are all a good source of Omega3.
