New person, new story, need help!!!!!!

Hi all. My name is Joyce. My whole life i've had a mild form of insomnia. I sleep very late. (usually 1 a.m.) I could handle this, and it was just a normal way of living for me. But lately (last 4 weeks), I rarely sleep at all. It takes me approx. 4 hours of lying awake in bed until I fall asleep. sometimes I dont fall asleep at all!! I went to the doctor, and he prescribed zopiclone. Actually, this medication is very good. I fall asleep within 1 hour, and the only main side effect is a bitter taste in the mouth. However, when I do not take the Zop, I cannot sleep!! I'm worried I'm developing a dependency on this drug. I'd like to know from you experienced insomniacs how long it's safe to take this kind of sleeping pill.
Another wierd thing is that if I dont sleep at night, I dont feel tired at all during the day! Is it possible that I dont require much sleep??
Alochol question- if I have a couple of drinks on the weekend, and take the pill to sleep, it has the opposite effect!! Does this sound normal?
I'm sorry I'm asking so many questions, but I'm so excited to find this site. the doctors are so unhelpful and condescending.
Please help me. I do feel very scared and sometimes wonder If I may have some other major medical problem.
