Elavil and Trazodone

Posted by Steve on June 12, 2001 at 13:04:14:

I've had insomnia off and on for the past 8 years or so (more like just being a really light sleeper), but 4 months ago when I switched jobs, it got really bad. I've had maybe 2 nights of normal sleep since then (I think because my body was so tired that it just needed to shut down for 12 hours). I've tried valerian and melatonin, and they don't do much, if anything. I don't even get the vivid dreams most people experience. I've tried cutting out all caffiene except what I need to wake myself up in the morning. My doctor has perscribed Ambien and Restoril. The Ambien seems to work OK, but I feel drugged the next day, which is as bad or worse than being tired, and Restoril does absolutely zip. I had some blood work done for possible thyroid problems, but it came back normal. Now my doctor wants to perscribe me either Elavil or Trazodone. I have personal issues with antidepressants (I really don't want to put something in my body that's going to mess with my head), so I told him no, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any success with either of these and what kind of side effects can be expected. I fail to see how an antidepressant is supposed to help you sleep (I'm not the cheeriest person, but I wouldn't call myself depressed), but I'm at my wits end here and sick of being tired, grumpy, and irratable all the time. If this keeps up much longer, I may have to try one of these meds as a last resort, but I don't want to end up where I can't sleep without it, so I would like to hear of other people's experiences. Thanks in advance for any info.
