Firstly, you are correct there is no insurance coverage for sleep studies (for most of us) unless it's sleep apnea. Very few sleep centers deal with that, even though every hospital claims to have a sleep center they almost always mean we have a sleep apnea center.
Ambian is a plain simple compound, it's not a benzo or a narcotic and the only addiction you can get is in the brain (not gonna try to spell psychological) As soon as you realize how harmless and effective it is you'll be more comfortable using it as a tool. There are people who think it's the drug from hell, the same people who will go off on you about food coloring in their soda (or how evil white bread is) but for the average guy it's awesome. Like any drug some people cannot take it.
It's almost too awesome and that's the problem, it's a quick effective way to bypass insomnia but it has a limited life. You can't take it every night for the rest of your life because it will quit working, for some people in a month, for others longer. I myself got 2 years out of it, spent 3 weeks of hell drying out, and now I'm back on it. And just scored an endless script from a doctor I see every six months - that's 6 refills of 30 10mg (go team)
I have insomnia by nature, but I always have insomnia from another drug I take. I had reiters syndrone. A disease that attacks young men (I was 28 when I got that nasty surprise) the disease causes major arthritis very similer to Rheumatoid arthritis except it doesn't eat the joints.
The drug Azulfidine completely cured me. I went from hobbling around on a cane, endless pain 24/7 a few times I could not get out of bed, I tried for 10-15 minutes at a time. I couldn't play catch with my son. I embarrassed him because I was so crippled up and slow.
Today I jog an hour every other day. I dance (popping locking and liquid - funk dances) My (kida porky) 13 year old son can't catch me in a foot race, unless I take pity and pretend to be winded. I can do anything I want so you can see why I can't stop the Azulfidine. The trade off is insomnia big time.
However, there is one thing - I can sleep during the day (like for a nap) very easy. It's true I only sleep 15 minutes, but still I get sleepy. I don't ever get sleepy at night and I wonder if I'm just wired for nocturnal activity?
If I were you I would get some Ambian and use it to establish sleep patterns, then I would try to get off it. I would also start with 5mg, not 10. But don't tell the doctor that, cut them in half.
It's far better to get natural sleep then to relie on a drug.
