During my 8 year battle with insomnia, I've tried more treatments than I can even list. Ambien has no effect on me. No sleep, no hallucinations, no nothing. 50-75 mg of Elavil each evening (I take it about 3 hours prior to bedtime) has been my most effective treatment. I am not, and never have been depressed, and have not experienced any side effects from the Elavil other than weight gain. Given the fact that I didn't sleep much for over a year, I was happy to accept the weight gain if it meant I could sleep. I am still on the Elavil and have managed to lose most of the weight I gained. I'm of the opinion that, if something works, take it. I don't have any hangups about "being on medication." My dad takes blood pressure medication and I'm sure it saves his life. This is no different. Now, I realize everyone is different. For some, the behavioral changes recommended by the sleep specialists in those books, work fine. For me, they didn't. I've been to an acupuncturist, herbologist, psychologist, sleep specialists, etc. For me, it's some kind of chemical thing that causes me to have sleep-onset insomnia, and the Elavil treats it successfully. Hopefully you can find something that works and doesn't give you side effects that are too severe. Don't let someone scare you from trying something because they've had bad side effects. If things worked the same way on everyone, we probably could get rid of most of the medical profession. Be patient, be open to trying things, and try not to get too worried about it--easier said than done, but you can do it.

Good luck and blessings to you!
