Steve, anything you ingest gets into the bloodstream and goes throughout your body...including water. From what I've read and learned, the fast acting (in the sense that they leave the body quicker) meds like Ambien, etc. have far more side-effects(like memory loss) etc. and like the benzos, become ineffective after awhile. The advantage of Elavil is that it is non-addicting and is used in such low doses (10 to 50) for its sedative effects. Some people (like Mike) have an aversion to the word anti-depressant and I think that's what it is rather than an understanding of what it does. Sleep medications do not teach you to sleep normally... there are far more problems to deal with than a night of sleep. They are for emergency use i.e. severe sleep deprivation over many days. They are only a respite not a cure. Serotonin is a natural chemical produced by the body and is obtained in many foods such as bananas, warm milk, turkey, etc. Elavil does not produce serotonin, it just enhances the neuro transmitters to make contact but your body really does it by itself. It's like if you cut yourself accidentally and put an antiseptic on it...that only prevents infection but your body heals itself by forming a scar etc. etc. You'll have to basically find what works for you with your Dr.s help but the people on this forum are knowledgeable and very helpful and provide a marvellous resource (you too Mike) for you to select a path and give it a try. Good Luck!!!!
