Mike....For your information,Elavil is not a SSRI(SELECTIVE SEROTONIN REUPTAKE INHIBITOR) but a tricyclic which just refers to the shape or structure of the compound. THEY HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR 40 OR SO YEARS AND Dr.'s feel safe in prescribing them because so many studies have been done on them. The SSRI's of which you speak are Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac and Luvox to name a few, came out much later and I don't know much about them but I have no reason to doubt your appraisal of the side effects. To quote from a reliable source, "amitriptyline or TCA or tricyclic cause sedation and therefore may be useful for anxiety, agitation or INSOMNIA." I guess you could say they are related in that their objective is similar but remember sleep medication is not without its problems (side effects)as well and everybody reacts differently.
How long has AMBIEN been around and who produces it? I can't knock it because I've never tried it but I do know that short-acting meds i.e. Ativan can have serious side effects.
